Full course description

The Asynchronous CodeVA Integrating Computer Science self paced course contains a series of learning segments to prepare educators for integrating computer science standards into core content curriculum. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the computer science conceptual strands and focus on methods to help identify overlapping topics and concepts. Through this course, educators will design integrated lessons for their classroom using CodeVA's Computer Science Integration Guide and explore pre-made lessons with our facilitators skilled at integrating Computer Science into their own K-8th grade classrooms. Participants with entry-level CS knowledge and background will find this training informative and engaging, including classroom teachers, instructional technology staff, specialists (LMS, Gifted, SPED, ELL, STEM, etc.), curriculum writers, or instructional leaders at the building or district level. Note: The CS Integration Modules will focus on a general understanding of CS Integration into core content, focusing mainly on K-8 SOLs, but K-12 educators can benefit from this entry-level knowledge. During K12 Integration CS, educators will: Reflect on experiences and practices of teaching in context Design lessons using best practices of Universal Design for Learning, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Computer Science pedagogies, and backward design Develop a plan for sustained classroom/school integration Deepen conceptual knowledge of computer science strands Practice deep use of integration tools and resources Understand and explain reasons for CS Integration Design and create Integrated Lesson Sketches.
